INTERESTING FACTS
AUSTRALIAN LIGHTHOUSES
As an island continent with an extensive coastline stretching over 20,000 kilometres, Australia has always relied heavily on lighthouses to provide navigation for essential shipping routes.
With over 250 lighthouses positioned around the coastline, Australia has a wealth of history attached to these manmade landmarks. sea1002fact.jpg
Australia’s first & longest operating navigational light is the Macquarie Lighthouse in Sydney which was originally built in 1818 from locally mined sandstone.
Many of the initial lighthouses constructed around the coast were built from the commonly found sandstone & a majority of these structures still stand today.
Even though all Australian lighthouses are now self operating, the romance of the lighthouse still draws many visitors to these structures.
Byron Bay & Cape Leeuwin are examples of historic lighthouses that have become iconic tourist attractions for both Australians & overseas visitors.
